Bernard Francou is a geomorphologist and glaciologist. He directs the research centre at the IRD development research institute. His research is focussed on mechanical erosion in periglacial environments (Alps, Andes), and glaciers as indicators of climate change. He has contributed to IPCC (International Panel on Climate Change) projects. As a mountain climber, he has opened expert itineraries in the Alps and the Andes, and has participated in a number of scientific expeditions (Everest, Andes). He chairs the scientific board of the FFCAM (French federation of mountain sports clubs).
